Jonas walked slowly. The snow was swirling around him, the flakes stinging his face, the cold biting into him. He held Gabriel tightly, tucked into his chest. He trudged on through the storm, knowing that somehow, when he got to his destination, everything would be OK. Everything would be alright. Jonas didn't know exactly what his destination was, but he knew that he had one. Jonas didn't know exactly where his destination was either, but he knew that he was heading in the right direction. Somehow, he knew that if he kept Gabriel safe and kept walking, they would be fine.
Then Jonas saw something.
Through the trees, he got a glimpse of something that he felt he had seen before. Something that he knew.
That's it. Jonas thought.
That's my destination. He knew that that was where he had to go. He began to walk faster and faster, wanting to get a clear view of his destination.
Jonas walked quickly through the snow, the storm, and the trees. He pushed aside a branch teeming with green needles and pinecones. He practically ran out into the open clearing that lay just beyond the branch...
and stopped.
Then Jonas remembered exactly where he was. He had seen this place before, in one of the memories given to him by the Giver.
He was standing in front of a dwelling.
No. He reminded himself.
Not a dwelling. What was the word? Then it struck him.
Home. Jonas remembered what the Giver had told him. That a home was different than a dwelling. That a home was more than where someone resided. A home was, well,
home.
When the Giver had told Jonas what a home was, he hadn't understood. But now he did. Now he understood exactly why a home was different than a dwelling. Jonas felt almost as if he belonged there. In that home.
The home was in a small clearing, surrounded by green evergreens and snow. The home itself was made of wooden logs, with big, glass windows covered in frost. Through one of the windows Jonas could see people gathered around a fire, their backs to him. No- not people-
family. A family was more than a group of people. Much more.
Jonas had an overwhelming feeling of happiness and warmth, and he knew that he belonged in there, with that family.
Gabriel stirred. Jonas looked down to see pale blue eyes staring up at him. Jonas looked at the little newchild. He felt that Gabriel belonged with that family too.
Jonas walked up to the door, Gabriel clutched in his arms. He knocked.
The door opened. And a woman that looked nearly identical to Jonas emerged.
Jonas and Gabriel were home.
